The Reason Why Your Business Exists

Today we’re going to look at a major key to business success that very few businesses truly understand the power of, which is why don’t put much thought into.

The best business leaders totally embrace this, which results in them playing the game of business at a far superior level to everyone else.

My mentor shared this lesson with me in the early days and the truth is I never understood the significance of it at first and once again it revolves around doing things 180 degrees different to the vast majority. What we are talking about is… WHY.

What do most business owners focus on when starting a business?

In 95% of cases it is WHAT they do or HOW they do it… And that’s the message they communicate to their market place.

Where as the successful 5% minority start with WHY, they communicate their reason why to their market place. As leadership guru Simon Sinek from the US says – “people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it!”

Starting with why sure isn’t going to win everyone, but that’s a good thing. You don’t want everyone, you just want to attract those who believe what you believe. This is a total game changer… When you work with those who believe what you believe, they are easier to deal with, trust is established must faster and it is a true win-win with both of you heading in the same direction.

For example, why is Apple so successful? After all it’s just a computer company isn’t it? Apple doesn’t tell the market place WHAT it does – sell computers. Apple tells the market place WHY they do it or what they believe, Apple say; “We believe in challenging the status quo, we believe in thinking differently.”

And everything they do and take to the market place supports their WHY or vision or the reason they exist, depending on what language you want to use.

Apple have attracted a cult following, people will line up all night to get the latest innovation like with the IPod, IPhone, IPad, etc, etc… Apple have raving fans is a BIG way. Just think about the way Apple customers rave about their latest Apple gadget everywhere they go… That doesn’t happen with IBM.

There are so many benefits with clearly communicating your WHY, not only does it attract the ideal customers for you, but also the ideal team members to continue driving your business growth.

Virgin are another awesome example… Virgin have created a fun culture where people are happy to work for them even though they can get paid more working somewhere else. Virgin go into market places where a big player is taking advantage of the consumer and Virgin present themselves as the people’s hero – giving a great value for money option.

Virgin have a culture that people want to be a part of, internally as team members and externally as customers… They certainly don’t attract everyone, but they attract those who believe what they believe.

There’s another way in communicating what we’re talking about here and that is; “Create a cause, not just a business!” People achieve amazing things when working for a cause they truly believe in.

If you’ve spent time with me at one of my events you will already know how I emphasize the importance of tapping into a much bigger purpose than yourself. Most people focus on themselves when starting out, which is the weakest driver of all.

When you focus on a cause much bigger than you, that is when the magic happens. I’ve seen it time and time again in business and in the Special Forces, we are all capable of achieving amazingly great things when you tap into our reason WHY.

And here’s the cool thing with your WHY… You can’t fake it!

One of my mentor’s Paul Dunn helps me with being a better communicator and Paul taught me that most people communicate from the head, where as the best communicators come from the heart. As he says “You’ve got to shift from head to heart”

Telling people WHAT you do is coming from your HEAD.

The 2 Critical Success Factors…

To be successful in business or anything for that matter comes down to 2 critical factors;

Potential and Performance

Constant training and personal development is an essential for anyone serious about being successful, however as important as it is to continually increase your skill set, it only gives you the first critical component of success - Potential.

Your potential is what you are capable of achieving with your current knowledge and skills when you are operating at peak performance.

Performance is where most people fall down. There is no doubt about the importance of loading up with more knowledge to give you more potential, but unfortunately for most people they caught up in the never ending doom loop of chasing more and more knowledge without focusing on their performance.

If you’ve attended a lot of seminars and trainings before and haven’t improved your results, performance is the issue. Performance is where the rubber meets the road and while it’s all about taking massive action, the crucial component left out of most trainings is you must take the right action.

I see this common mistake too many times with entrepreneurs, they are working flat out with their head down and bum up, with the false belief that as long as they are busy they must be making progress, right? WRONG!!

Most entrepreneurs waste their days away working on the trivial $2 an hour tasks instead of the $1,000 an hour tasks.

Every successful person understands the importance of ongoing personal development to stay ahead of the pack… The missing piece of the puzzle for most people is fulfilling their potential and how they can overcome bottlenecks and barriers when they present themselves so they can operate unrestricted at full throttle where performance meets potential.

In my time training as a Commando in the Special Forces it was the same combination, where we constantly trained to further develop our skill set to give us an edge over our competitors on game day, this is the 1% effect all elite people focus on that I share at my business seminars.

The big thing I got out my Special Forces soldier training was how to operate at peak performance. The 5 Minute Expert!

Beware… The 5 minute experts are circling.

I’m sure you’ve experienced it, as there are so many business mentors, business coaches, many different people coaching and consultants out there today and some of them are very good at what they do.

However if you dig a little deeper with most to see if they have any substance behind them, experience or runs on the board, in most cases they fall dramatically short.

It reminds me of a business group I was once involved in for a few months, there were so many 5 minute experts getting around in this group spruiking how good they were and funny thing was they were so full of their own manufactured importance they would only talk to certain people…

And the most interesting part of it all was that most of these people had attended a couple of business seminars, read a couple of business books or completed a 2 week business coaching program and BINGO, they were the new expert on the block!

…And not scared to let everyone know about it I might add.  :)

5 minute experts are present in every industry, I’m sure you’ve seen them… right?

The crucial thing for us budding entrepreneurs is that we don’t fall victim to 5 minute experts… Can you imagine what could happen to your business and personal life if you took advice from one of them… Ouch!! Scary stuff.

I remember a small example for myself falling victim to an accountant who was playing out of his depth. It was only a small deal I took to him about 7 years ago and it cost me a little over $10,000 for his totally useless, totally wrong advice… And to rub salt into the wounds I paid him for his wrong advice. How embarrassing!!

The thing that we all need to take on board is that if you get the wrong advice for your business it will cost you big time!! Possibly even bankrupt you.

So beware and do your recon when consulting an expert to ensure they have the goods to get you your desired result. Look at what they’ve helped others achieve, their experience, credentials and what they’ve personally achieved.

A lot of business owners and entrepreneurs fall victim to their own “5 minute expert” thinking… I’ve seen it too many times where as soon as someone goes into business for themselves, they know everything there is to know about business.

Interesting thinking when you look at the most successful entrepreneurs in the world like Henry Ford, Richard Branson, Bill Gates, etc… They surround themselves with a team of experts.

I do the same myself and have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in my own education and continue doing so today… It doesn’t matter who you are you can’t achieve great things by going it alone!!

Quite often I see employees falling into their own “5 minute expert” coma, as they see what the boss is doing and think they know better… Most don’t have the guts to take the entrepreneurship path and the ones that do quickly learn it’s not as easy as it looked when they were spectating.

Bottom line anyone can all fall for the “5 minute expert” thinking, but beware if you want to play a bigger game and go to a whole new level faster than you ever thought possible, you must seek the right advice, coaching and support.

You’ve got a bigger game to play

Have you ever felt like you weren’t achieving the results that you know you are really capable of?

I know I’ve felt like that many times.

I was doing a motivational talk yesterday with a group of top performing sales people and one of the things we were talking about was the 4 minute mile…

See, before Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile barrier, everyone thought it was impossible to run the mile in 4 minutes or less… But when it was achieved all of a sudden many others starting running the mile in under 4 minutes.

Isn’t that interesting?

Sometimes we let ourselves be limited by our success thermostat… Meaning that if you’ve earned the same amount of money for the last few years like $100,000 for instance, you’re thermostat is set to that level.

Our mind is a very powerful thing, hey.

I’ll be the first to put my hand up and confess I’ve been affected by the success thermostat syndrome in the past… And I wasn’t even aware of it, as… “You don’t know what you don’t know!”

The BIG changes started happening for me when I began pouring the right fuel in… We are a lot like cars when you think about it, put in crap fuel and you get poor performance.

When I began reading all about others successes and attending countless seminars around the world pouring the high performance fuel into my mind, things rapidly began to change.

Much like the 4 minute mile syndrome I guess, all of a sudden when I seen and heard what others were achieving, I knew with the right guidance it was possible for me to do it too.

The result… My success thermostat limited me no longer… And my income continues to accelerate each year as I continue my own personal development and help others do the same.

This old saying rings so true;

“Rich people have big libraries, poor people have big TV’s”

I hope that helps, as I’m guessing like the rest of us you’ve got a bigger game to play.

The Henry Ford Secret…

Henry Ford was taken to court back in his day by the Washington Post for of all things being ignorant…

Ford took it all in his stride until he finally got sick of the two dollar questions being fired at him from the prosecutor and he stood up slammed his fist on the bench and said;
“Why on earth would I bother filling my head up full of useless information when on my desk I have a row of buttons that I can push anytime I require and have an expert give me the answer immediately?”

Henry Ford was a very successful person I’m sure you’d agree… Here’s the big thing; The row of buttons you and I have at our finger tips are more powerful than Henry Ford could have ever dreamed of. We have a much bigger advantage than him if armed with the right knowledge and acted upon.

There’s an army of over qualified experts all over the world ready and willing to work for you for as little as a few dollars per hour. Oh and did I mention that some of these people have multiple University degrees, they are very good at what they do.

If you require an information product, basically if you can think it and explain what you want they can make it for you.

“Be the general of the army, not a soldier in the trenches”

Before you look to outsource, first you must map your strategy so you can stop doing the two dollar an hour jobs and start focusing on where the real money is made.

Don’t fall for the head down bum up approach to business running around like a chook pecking the scraps off the ground, which is easy to get sucked into with no blueprint to follow.

Are You Building Your Most Valuable Asset?

The most valuable asset any business has, whether it be an online business or offline business is a database of people who are interested in what you have…

In fact it is really a database of people who you have developed a good relationship with who are interested in what you have to say and offer.

Building your database is an ongoing daily task, remember it’s all about building the relationship and staying in contact with your prospects so that you are their when they are ready to buy.

A good point to keep in mind when building your database is that each time you get a new addition to your database it is future income, now I’m not saying that you will sell to everyone that enters your database, however you will obviously sell to a percentage of your database.
So if you’re struggling to see the value in focusing on your database, just think of it as future revenue.

There are many different strategies you can use to build your database and let’s start with someone traditional offline business examples;

A good one for a traditional bricks and mortar business is to run an in-store competition where people enter their details into the draw to win a prize that can be something you’ve packaged up in house or you may even offer a holiday to gain more attention. This allows you to capture peoples details so you can stay in contact with them to build the relationship and send out special offers to generate more business.

Here’s an example from a café business I worked with;

Everyone who entered the café was invited to enter the draw to win a free lunch, which created street talk “Who said there’s no FREE lunches?” and was an effective marketing strategy in itself generating more clients.

With the details that were captured was the clients birthday, then every year just before their birthday we sent them an invite to come in for their free birthday cake that we had made specially for them. Now the key here was that how many people celebrate their birthday by themselves?

Yes these people would bring all of their friends and family, which sky rocketed the cafes sales… Then the café would also capture all of the extra peoples details and the whole thing just ‘Snowballed’ BIG time.

See how simple it can be to massively increase your sales - simple strategy, BIG results!! And a great example of the benefits in building your database.
